Sweet potatoes make great soup. This soup is thick and smooth, with little flecks of ginger to cleanse your palate a bit and work with the heat of the chiles to spice things up. This soup is a great example of the melding of cultures; it travels the world. It leans to the East in its flavoring, but there is the surprise of peanut butter, which takes us to Africa and the sweet potato itself takes us to the Incan Empire. For us, pot roast is winter. It offers such a bang-for-your-buck flavor-wise, with its warm, rich flavor, its rib-sticking meatiness and it’s just so simple to prepare. It is truly the perfect Sunday dinner, on a cold winters day. And not to be forgotten, the house smells fantastic and you can spend the afternoon doing a jigsaw puzzle. 


I make different slaws at different times of the year. This is one of my Winter Slaws. It is a combination of Savoy cabbage, carrots, peas, dried cranberries, scallions and cilantro.
The Latin Lover is not fond of vinaigrettes. He doesn’t care for the sharpness of vinegar. I can’t get enough of that flavor…we’re a mixed marriage. So I came up with this version that works for both of us. It has citrus, honey, and few other little delights to warm his soul.
