Aïoli is the quintessential sauce to serve with patatas bravas, the famous fried potato tapa.  Actually, aïoli is the perfect sauce for anything fried.  Okay.  It may be the perfect sauce.  Period.  It offers you a completely flexible base for any number of wonderful options and is the absolute best dip for French fries.  Or shrimp.  Or chicken fingers…well, you get the idea! When autumn arrives, so do apples and pears.  In abundance.  Today, The Goddess is focusing on apples.  The varieties of older and new apples has positively exploded.  And that’s a delicious thing.  This salad is very close to a Waldorf Salad.  But, of course, The Goddess made a couple of changes.  This graces our Thanksgiving table almost every year.  Continue reading →

I love salad dressing…period.  It doesn’t matter if it’s creamy or a vinaigrette.  I just love it.  And I like to have a little salad with my dressing.  Or to put it another way, I like to have a bowl of really delicious calories!  Now, having said that, this is worth every…single…calorie! Back in the day when “cracker” was something you ate with soup or put cheese or peanut butter on, my mother used to make this salad.  I had completely forgotten about it.  Of course, there was no recipe that she left behind.  I was dicing a tomato and some scallions, and the memory of it came flooding back.  Thank goodness for food memories. This is a throw-back to my childhood.  On hot summer days (we didn’t have air-condition!), when my mother didn’t want to heat up the kitchen, she would make this in the morning, and put it in the fridge.  At dinner time, she would add it to chopped iceberg lettuce, along with thawed frozen peas.  It was so very good, at the end of a hot day.  Continue reading →

This is summer…or in this case, late spring, on a plate.  It’s perfect for lunch or dinner, and can go main course by adding some shrimp or tuna.  Use whatever beans you have in your cupboard, but garbanzo or kidney are my favorite for this salad. Continue reading →

It’s been awhile since I’ve had a fling.  Yes, The Spicy Honey is aware of my dalliance and he approves.  Right now, you’re wondering just what kind of blog post this is, aren’t you?  So, my dear gutter-minded-friends, I’m talking about tarragon and mustard!  And the ultimate question—is it a sauce?  Or is it a vinaigrette? When the thermometer hits the higher ranges and you feel yourself melting, there’s something so completely refreshing about a cucumber salad, served very cold. There are probably hundreds of versions, but this one has radishes for extra color and crunch…it’s a keeper.  Continue reading →
