I “discovered” black barley about five or six years ago.  Black barley is a different beast, than pearled barley.  It shares that somewhat nutty flavor, but it retains a delightful chewiness…texture, Baby!  Continue reading →

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is img_3502.jpgI love lamb.  I have always felt that the reason others don’t enjoy it, is because they’ve had over-cooked lamb.  Gray-colored meat is all that appetizing to anyone.  Admittedly, lamb has a distinct flavor and can be a tad gamey…maybe that’s why I like it so much!  Continue reading →

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is img_3539.jpgSicilian cooking is really fusion cooking.  The Moors were in Sicily in the 10th and 11th centuries, and they brought all kinds of good things, like, apricots, sugar, citrus, sweet melons, rice, saffron, raisins, nutmeg, clove, pepper, pine nuts and cinnamon.  This recipe is sort of an homage to the Moorish presence. This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is img_6967-2.jpgI received a jar of delicious mixed nuts for my birthday.  The Unbound Reader and Middle Son, we the source of this goodness.  These nuts (not the children!) were addictive.  I’m certain you noticed that past tense reference.  They were crisp, ever so slightly sweet and salty, with a really savory spice flavor.  Well, I thought it worthwhile to try and reproduce them in far greater quantity.  This is that experiment.  Continue reading →

I love eggplant…my favorite ways are usually the way the Asian use them.  Salty, sweet with a crispy exterior and a creamy interior…but, then there’s baba ganoush.  And the Brazilians serve it simply grilled, with maybe a drizzle of olive oil and vinegar.  Okay…so it really doesn’t matter in what cuisine the flavors lay, I’m there for eggplant!  Continue reading →

I was flying around the InterWebs and ran across a reference to Apple Fritter Bread, and I thought it sounded wonderful…but that one was a quick bread.  I wanted a yeast bread and then I found one.  So I took to my handy-dandy roll recipe and made a change here and there, so here we are!  This dough is pillowy soft and somewhat sticky, but a dream to work with.  I takes a bit longer for it to raise, because it’s both rich and sweet.  You know, good things!
