An Assortment of BasilsBasil, is more than just pesto.  We tend to use it in savory ways, but it’s great used in a sweet, dessert-type way too.  Basil like mint, comes in flavors.  Here we have from the top left corner (clockwise) Purple basil, Thai basil, Lemon basil, Columnar basil, Variegated basil and Genovese basil, the one we’re probably most familiar with.  Continue reading →

052I’ve had this recipe for Russian dressing, given to me by a colleague from my single days, for years.  God, that was decades ago.  Anyway, she made this all the time; this was her go-to dressing and with good reason.  It’s simple and a rather nice change of pace from bottled dressings of this ilk…a little sweet, a little tangy and drop-dead easy!  The perfect summer dressing…. It’s beautiful, isn’t it? Lavender is much more than a flower and a scent for soap and potpourri. It grows freely and wildly in France, (in my garden and yours, too) and was a subject the Impressionists returned frequently.  And lavender is a lovely spice to grace your table, too.   Continue reading →

003 - CopyWe’ve talked about vinaigrettes in the Mother Sauces section.  This is a lower calorie version with huge flavor and it still has the mouth-feel of the higher fat version.  The reason…gum.  Not the kind you chew for fresh breath or bubbles, xanthan and guar gums.  Anyone who is gluten-free knows about this, but they usually use it to replace gluten in bread.  But, it’s much more than that.    Continue reading →

Since it snowed today, the first day of Spring, I decided it was still winter enough to post this.  Anyway, tabbouleh sort of transcends seasons, though I think many of us think of tabbouleh as a summer salad. Its make-ahead qualities, no mayonnaise, and no real cooking involved, really do scream summer.  But, why limit ourselves to this deliciousness only in the summer?  This is the perfect autumnal and winter salad, too.  Continue reading →
