Spice cake was my father’s favorite cake. My mother had two recipes, a variation on her Sour Cream Cake, which frankly I’ve never had good luck with, and this one. Which I always have very, very good luck with. Continue reading
This is one of THOSE sauces. The one you keep returning to. The one you keep tweaking until it’s perfect, and then you tweak it again. And no matter what, it is spectacularly delicious.
Dream Bars…mmm…they are the stuff good dreams are made of. A little gooey. A little crunchy. Sweet and delicious. And so, so easy.
When I was a child, bread pudding was a frequent visitor to our table. My father loved custard-y things and my mother’s bread pudding fit that bill perfectly. I make mine a bit different, but the roots are in that farm kitchen.
My mother came from a long line of damn fine cooks. Some cooked meat well, others were bakers. I always think of Aunt Mary as a baker. Though I suspect she could make a mean pot roast. She made this pie. It was her little bit of heaven, and it is a culinary delight to behold.
Small meatballs are a great tapa. This is a really nice blend to form into patties for breakfast sausages, either with or without the mustard-cream sauce…though, you know…it’s all about the sauce! Or it should be.

These brownies are all that, but they have the added bonus of coffee and bourbon. We’ll say these are “adult” brownies…I think they’re better the next day, but they’re damn fine, just out of the oven and cooled for maybe 15 minutes, too…damn fine!
Banana Bread is delicious, but it’s particularly delicious with toasted nuts and chocolate. This one’s boozed up, even though I may have this for breakfast. Toasted with butter….MMMMM!
Sweet potatoes or yams, I honestly don’t really know the difference. I know there is a difference. But, if you mash ’em up with some bourbon, top ’em with bacon and pecans and a good drizzle of maple syrup…well then, I don’t think it matters one bit.
Pumpkin Pie is as much a part of Thanksgiving as turkey. Have you noticed that? But, it shouldn’t just be a Thanksgiving pie. It’s so easy to prepare, it should grace our tables more frequently. Let’s all work on that, okay?
