The Spicy Honey loves Jamaican patties.  They’re spicy (like him!) and just a quick, full-flavored bite, that’s perfect for lunch or a snack or dinner or breakfast.  In other words, good any time, any place.  Continue reading →

This is a marriage made in heaven!  Inspiration is a funny thing…it can come out of nowhere.  It can be overheard.  It can sneak up on you.  Or is can simply be the unfolding of something unexplained…that’s sort what happened here.  Continue reading →

Sloppy Joe’s are one of those wonderful memories we have from childhood.  I love them.  I still do.  I like mine on potato rolls, with slices of raw onion, dill pickle slices  and potato chips on the side.  MMM…what a wonderful memory!  Continue reading →

arrowroot, bay leaves, beef base paste, beef broth, browned ground beef, celery leaves, dried mushrooms, onion, pearled barley, sun-dried tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce

It’s chilly here in North Carolina.  I think chillier than last year at this time.  And that makes it perfect soup weather.  And there’s something so comforting, and well, soul-warming about beef-barley soup.  Get out the soup spoons and the good bread.  Continue reading →

beef broth, bell peppers, capers, diced tomatoes, dry white wine, Garlic, green olives, Ground beef, Onions, raisins, sherry vinegar, Spices, tomato paste

Cuban-Style PicadilloEvery Cuban woman (or man, I suppose) knows how to make Picadillo.  It’s quick and delicious, but it’s never as good as “mami makes”!  Some things transcend cultures, don’t they?  I learned how to make this from my mother-in-law and from The Latin Lover’s great-aunt, both damn fine cooks.  It’s a very valuable recipe to have.  Continue reading →

Skillet Pizza-in-a-MeatloafI had some mini-pepperoni that just seemed like they would be a nice addition to some lean ground beef…I was thinking maybe a taco-like thing, but The Latin Lover said, “We haven’t had meatloaf in a while.  I love meatloaf”…well, what more could a Goddess want to hear?  Continue reading →

Asian Sloppy Joe'sI hope you are familiar with the Asian chef, Ming Tsai.  He did a series on PBS and he had a restaurant in the Boston area, Blue Ginger.  Anyway, this is based on a recipe from one of his books.  They are so good, sloppy and just plain delicious.  I think they’re better the next day.  Continue reading →

Simple, Simply Delicious Sloppy Joe'sSloppy Joe’s were always my birthday request when I was but a wee one.  I still love them.  My mother made hers with tomato soup, but I tend not to use canned soups…I think it might just be a bit of snobbery on my part, because there really was a reason I asked for them every year.  They were sublimely delicious!  Continue reading →

Salisbury Steak with Mushroom, Onion and Caper SauceSalisbury Steak is just a lovely way of saying that we’re looking at a thick hamburger “steak” with gravy.  And I’m all over that.  I hate those thick burgers, that in order to eat them you have to unhinge your jaw, like a python.  I always eat those types of burgers with a knife and fork anyway, so why not add some terrific gravy?  Continue reading →
